How To Avoid a Water Disaster In Your Home

A friend recently called me to see if I could be of assistance in locating a temporary rental property for her family.  The tragic story was that while on vacation her home had been flooded when the supply line to a fixture had ruptured.  Unfortunately this is not an uncommon story, and water damage from any source is the number two cause for homeowner insurance claims.

A simple deterrent to this problem is to turn off the water at the main before you leave on vacation.   You may also want to turn off your water softener to avoid the build up of brine sediment while the water is off  and turn your water heater to “pilot” or “vacation”.  When you turn the water back on there may be a little rust or sediment in the water, so run the faucet a few minutes before using.
